Growing up, one of my favorite snacks was pita bread with tzatziki. I think it stems from having Greek neighbors who ALWAYS made big batches of it (weekly) and would send bowlfuls over to us. It was also great in sandwiches with some grated cucumber.

Is tzatziki vegan?

Traditional tzatziki is not vegan. It contains dairy in the form of yogurt or cream cheese. However, you can easily make your own vegan friendly tzatziki with a few cheeky swaps.

How do you make vegan tzatziki sauce?

    The Ingredients

    • Dairy free yogurt– Any plain yogurt can be used, like soy or vegan Greek yogurt. If you use a coconut yogurt, be sure it has no coconut flavor throughout.
    • Extra virgin olive oil– Adds some richness to the tzatziki and helps thicken it up beautifully.
    • Mint– Optional, but freshly chopped mint can balance out the dill.
    • Fresh dill– Chopped dill is a must for any good tzatziki recipe!
    • Lemon juice– The acidity balances out the yogurt and pairs well with the olive oil and garlic notes.
    • Garlic– Freshly minced garlic cloves.
    • Salt & Pepper– Adjust this to taste.
    • Cucumbers– Finely grated cucumbers. You can peel them if you wish.

    The Directions

Step 1 – In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients. For a sauce or dressing, add extra yogurt. Refrigerate for at least an hour to thicken.
